Do you know that people in all cultures love to play games?
Before going abroad, try learning about the kinds of games being played in the culture that you are entering. It should not be too difficult.
Backgammon, Chess, Tic-Tac-Toe and Mancala are games that will most likely be played by your soon-to-be local friends. Simple games such as these offer a unique opportunity to communicate with locals while your language skills are still basic. Invite co-workers and neighbors over for a game, enjoy some food and drink and allow for stress-free conversation and language learning. You can even play Tic-Tac-Toe in the dirt outside your home with local children.
Become proficient in a board game that is played in the host country. You will probably not win, but you can put up a good fight and earn some respect. Be a good loser and remember to praise your opponent.
And don’t forget to have fun!
